Degrees of Comparison

Ступені порівняння

Revise the rules!

Degrees of Comparison are used when we compare one person or one thing with another. There are three Degrees of Comparison in English.

1. Positive degree.

e.g. small

intelligent

2. Comparative degree.

e.g. smaller (one-syllable words)

more intelligent (two- or more syllable words)

3. Superlative degree.

e.g. the smallest (one-syllable words)

the most intelligent (two- or more syllable words)

 

Let us see all of them one by one.

1.Positive degree.

When we speak about only one person or thing, We use the Positive degree.

Examples:

• This house is big.

In this sentence we talk about only one noun “The house".

• He is a 
tall student.

• This flower is 
beautiful.

• He is an 
intelligent boy.

2.Comparative degree.

When we 
compare two persons or two things with each other.


Examples:

a. This house is bigg
er than that one. 

b. This flower is more beautiful than that one. 

c. He is more intelligent than this boy.

d. He is taller than Mr. Hulas. 


When we compare more than two persons or things with one another,

we the  Superlative degree.


Examples:

a. This is the biggest house in this street.

b. This flower is the most beautiful one in this garden

c. He is the most intelligent in this class.

d. He is the tallest student in this class.

 

Spelling rules

1. Consonant +y - + i+er (est)

e.g. pretty - prettier - the prettiest

2. One syllable word - double consonant

e.g. sad - sadder - the saddest

3. Final "e" is ommited (випадає)

e.g. nice - nicer - the nicest


Irregular adjectives

good - better - the best

bad - worse - the worst

much\many\a lot of - more - the most

far - further - the furthest

little - less the least
